What Is a Deep Cleaning?

Understand the importance of deep cleaning and how it treats gum disease effectively.

Understanding Deep Cleaning in Dentistry

Many dental patients are familiar with routine cleanings, but not everyone understands what a deep cleaning entails or why it’s necessary. Unlike standard cleanings, deep cleaning is a targeted treatment for gum disease, playing a crucial role in maintaining oral health.

Deep Cleaning vs. Regular Cleaning

Routine teeth cleanings, also known as prophylactic cleanings or “prophys,” are preventive measures meant for patients with generally healthy gums. These cleanings remove plaque and tartar from the visible surfaces of the teeth, helping to maintain oral hygiene.

In contrast, a deep cleaning—technically called periodontal therapy or soft tissue management—is prescribed when there are signs of gum disease. This procedure goes beyond the surface, removing plaque and bacteria from beneath the gumline and smoothing the tooth roots to prevent bacterial regrowth.

Why a Deep Cleaning Is Necessary

Deep cleaning is a critical treatment for patients with periodontal (gum) disease. This condition can lead to gum recession, tooth loss, and other systemic health issues if not properly managed. By thoroughly cleaning below the gumline and addressing infected areas, deep cleaning helps halt the progression of gum disease and supports the healing of your gums.

Dentists recommend this procedure when early signs of gum disease—such as bleeding gums, pocket formation, or inflammation—are detected during an exam. Ignoring these symptoms can escalate the issue, necessitating more invasive treatments later on.
