Dental Exams and Cleanings in Scarborough, ON
If it’s been a while since you had your last dental exam, here’s a closer look at what you can expect.
Dental exams and cleanings are much more than being able to flash a winning smile – they could make a big difference to your oral and general health.
Why Dental Checkups Are Important for You
There are roughly 132 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed on a daily basis. Early detection and screening can dramatically increase the chances of recovery. Regular dental exams can also resolve sleep apnea and help you get that much-needed restful sleep during nights.
By taking your children to the dentist, you are setting a good example for them to follow in later life. They will understand the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. Regular dental checkups also allow you to build a rapport with your dentist based on trust.
What Happens During a Dental Exam
If you are a new patient at My Dentist Middlefield, our dentist will first examine you for any obvious dental issues before making a more detailed evaluation. If you have any immediate dental or oral problems, we will address those first before doing the cleaning.
The initial exam usually involves a detailed examination of your teeth, gums, lips, and cheeks. Depending on the problem, your dentist may require digital X-rays for further diagnosis and clarity. Although we recommend twice-yearly dental checkups, patients with problems may need to visit more frequently for diagnosis and treatment.
What Dental X-Rays Involve
X-rays are very useful in identifying areas of decay between teeth and around old fillings. We use safe, efficient, and clear dental x-rays with low radiation to capture images of the interiors of your oral cavity. Our dental team will place a protective ‘bib’ over the chest, abdomen, and pelvic region to avoid exposure to radiation.
At times, the dentist may recommend more frequent x-rays for children to monitor growth and track dental progress. For example, dental x-rays can capture adult teeth growing behind baby teeth.
