Below, we’ve compiled answers to some frequently asked questions about dental care. Please have a look through them, and feel free to contact us for more detailed information on any topic.

Why is it recommended to visit the dentist twice a year?

Your oral health is dynamic and influenced by your diet, habits, and age. Regular dental check-ups are crucial for the early detection of potential issues before they escalate. Many dental conditions don’t present obvious symptoms, making professional examinations essential. Our dentists possess the expertise and advanced tools to assess your oral health thoroughly, something you can’t replicate at home. While twice-yearly visits are common, the ideal frequency varies. Based on your specific needs, your dentist will recommend a personalized schedule. Some patients, particularly those with gum disease, may require more frequent visits, such as every three or four months. These recommendations are always made with your long-term oral health in mind. Regular visits are your best defence for maintaining strong, clean, and bright teeth, as well as fresh breath. Our hygienists can remove stubborn stains that regular brushing and at-home whitening treatments can’t address. We also provide personalized guidance on optimizing your at-home oral hygiene routine.

How often should I brush and floss?

We recommend brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once a day. Most people find it convenient to brush in the morning and then brush and floss before bed. Brushing after lunch is also beneficial. Each brushing session should last a full two minutes, ensuring you cover all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and biting surfaces. When flossing, use about an arm’s length of floss, using a clean two-inch section for each tooth to prevent cross-contamination. If you would like a demonstration of proper brushing and flossing techniques, please ask your dentist or hygienist during your next visit.

Is flossing really necessary?

Despite some recent discussions, flossing remains a vital part of your oral hygiene routine. While more research is ongoing, the importance of removing plaque and food particles from between your teeth is undeniable. Neglecting this area can lead to bacterial growth, bad breath, and other oral health issues. Therefore, we strongly recommend daily flossing.

Even with thorough brushing and flossing, do I still need professional cleanings?

Yes, absolutely! Even with the best at-home care, some stubborn buildup, particularly tartar (hardened plaque), can only be removed through professional cleaning. A professional scaling and polishing by our hygienists not only improves the appearance of your smile by removing stains but also creates a smoother surface that makes it harder for bacteria to adhere, enhancing the effectiveness of your at-home efforts.

What causes cavities?

While it’s commonly believed that sugar directly causes cavities, the process is more complex. Sugar acts as fuel for bacteria in your mouth. When you eat, enzymes in your saliva break down carbohydrates into sugars. These sugars, along with those from sweet foods, are consumed by bacteria. These bacteria then produce acid as a waste product, which erodes your tooth enamel and the underlying dentin, leading to cavities and tooth decay.

When should children have their first dental visit?

We recommend that children have their first dental visit when their first tooth erupts or by age one, whichever comes first. However, caring for your baby’s oral health should begin even before the first tooth appears. After feeding, gently clean your baby’s gums with a damp washcloth. For more advice on infant oral care, please consult your pediatrician or our team at MyDentist.

I experience dental anxiety. What can I do?

Please let us know! We understand that dental anxiety is common, and we want to ensure your comfort. Informing us about your nervousness allows us to prepare for your appointment accordingly. We can adjust our approach by slowing down, providing detailed explanations, and establishing a communication system so you can easily signal if you need a break. Sedation is also an option in certain cases, and we are happy to discuss this with you. Overcoming dental anxiety is a collaborative effort, and we are committed to creating a warm, welcoming, and pleasant environment for you. If there is anything we can do to improve your experience, please don’t hesitate to ask.
