The term “crown” generally refers to the visible portion of your tooth above the gum line. This can be the natural top part of your tooth, a protective cap for a damaged tooth, or even an artificial tooth attached to a dental implant. At MyDentist, we understand the importance of a healthy and functional crown for your overall oral health.
Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure performed by our experienced dentists or specialists, such as oral surgeons or periodontists, who specialize in gum health. This procedure may be necessary for one or multiple teeth, depending on the required restorative work. We prioritize your comfort and offer this procedure right here in our modern offices. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure a pain-free experience, and for patients with dental anxiety, we can discuss sedation options to help you relax.

In the context of crown lengthening, we are referring to the natural crown of your tooth. This procedure involves removing gum tissue and/or bone to expose more of the tooth structure. This is often necessary when a tooth is broken or decayed near the gum line, leaving insufficient tooth structure for a dental crown or filling to properly attach. Attempting to place a crown on an inadequate foundation can lead to discomfort, irritation, inflammation, and further decay. Crown lengthening provides a stable base for a well-fitting and long-lasting restoration.
The procedure begins with accessing the tooth structure. Our dentists will make small incisions in the gum tissue to gently pull it away from the tooth, exposing the tooth root and underlying bone. In some cases, a small amount of bone may also need to be removed. After reshaping the bone, the area is thoroughly cleaned, and the gums are carefully stitched back into place. Throughout the procedure, local anesthesia ensures you remain comfortable and pain-free.
While crown lengthening is considered a minor surgery, we understand that pain tolerance varies. We will provide personalized pain management recommendations and prescriptions to ensure your comfort during recovery. We will also provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to clean the area and brush your teeth, to promote proper and comfortable healing.
Approximately one week after the procedure, you will return to our office for stitch removal and a check-up to monitor the healing process. Once your gums have fully healed, we will schedule your appointment for the placement of your permanent dental crown.
