If you’ve been diagnosed with periodontal disease, our team at MyDentist may recommend a deep cleaning. This procedure, also known as scaling and root planing or periodontal therapy, is the most effective treatment for gum disease. Periodontal disease occurs when unhealthy, swollen gums begin to detach from the teeth, forming pockets where plaque and tartar accumulate, leading to infection. During a deep cleaning, our skilled dentists or hygienists meticulously remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth and tooth roots. Following this, the root surfaces are smoothed to prevent future bacterial adhesion and facilitate gum reattachment.

In its early stages, gum disease is known as gingivitis. It’s caused by an overgrowth of harmful bacteria (found in plaque) that attack the soft tissues of your mouth. Early signs include red, swollen, or bleeding gums. If detected early, we can often reverse the damage. If the condition is more advanced, we offer a range of effective restorative dentistry procedures to restore your oral health and smile. Through regular checkups, cleanings, and specialized periodontal interventions, we can help you maintain strong, healthy, and disease-free teeth and gums.
While deep cleanings cannot completely cure periodontal disease, they are highly effective in slowing or halting its progression. This treatment can often reduce the need for future surgical interventions and help restore swollen, bleeding gums to a healthy, pink state. For patients with gum disease, we may recommend that deep cleanings, along with regular periodontal maintenance checkups, become a part of your routine dental care at MyDentist.

Managing periodontal disease often involves a variety of treatments in addition to deep cleanings. Periodontal therapy focuses on enhancing the gum tissue that supports your teeth. When possible, diseased tissue is replaced with healthy tissue. In cases of severe gum recession, gum grafting may be necessary to reposition gum tissue and cover exposed tooth roots. We also directly address bacterial infections by applying topical antibacterial or antibiotic solutions, either alone or in combination with other treatments.
For patients with advanced or complex periodontal disease, a referral to a specialist may be necessary. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the treatment of gingivitis, periodontal disease, and other conditions affecting the soft tissues of the mouth. They have completed additional specialized training in periodontics after their general dental degree. While all dentists are trained to treat periodontal disease, a periodontist’s specialized training makes them an expert in gum disease, its risk factors, and associated symptoms and conditions. If you have been diagnosed with advanced gum disease, a periodontist may become an integral part of your dental care team, working with us to develop a treatment plan to manage your condition.
