Implant-Supported Bridges

For patients who have lost more than one tooth, an implant-supported bridge offers a secure & permanent solution.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Addressing missing or damaged teeth is crucial for maintaining long-term oral health. Beyond aesthetics, a missing tooth can lead to various complications. The surrounding teeth may shift, causing misalignment and impacting your facial appearance. Furthermore, tooth loss can hinder your ability to chew properly and enjoy a nutritious diet. While options like removable partial dentures exist, implant-supported bridges offer superior stability and functionality. An implant bridge can effectively restore your chewing ability, allowing you to eat comfortably again.

What Are Implant-Supported Bridges?

While traditional dental bridges can address many issues related to tooth loss, implant-supported bridges provide distinct advantages. Traditional bridges rely on adjacent teeth for support, requiring these healthy teeth to be reshaped before the bridge is cemented in place. In contrast, implant-supported bridges utilize dental implants for support, eliminating the need to alter healthy teeth. This approach preserves your natural tooth structure while replacing missing teeth.

How Many Implants Are Needed?

An implant-supported bridge is a permanent solution for replacing multiple missing teeth, secured by dental implants. The number of implants required varies based on individual needs. A common configuration involves two implants supporting three teeth: two “cap” teeth on either end, connected by a middle tooth.

Dental implants also play a crucial role in preventing bone loss, a common consequence of tooth removal. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone no longer receives the necessary stimulation from chewing forces, leading to bone resorption and shrinkage. Implant-supported bridges help maintain bone density by providing this stimulation. While some bone resorption may still occur under the middle of the bridge, it is significantly less than with removable options or no replacement at all.

A fixed implant-supported bridge is a cost-effective alternative to replacing each missing tooth with individual implants and crowns. While more expensive than removable options due to the surgical procedure, it offers a long-term, stable solution. The best treatment option for replacing missing teeth depends on your unique health and financial circumstances. At MyDentist, we are committed to discussing all available options with you.

Procedure Overview

The process of getting an implant-supported bridge typically involves several appointments:

  • Implant Placement: The first step involves the surgical placement of dental implants into the jawbone.
  • Healing Period: Following implant placement, a healing period of several months is required for the bone and gums to integrate with the implants.
  • Impressions: Once the implant sites have healed, your dentist will take impressions of your mouth to create a model.
  • Custom Bridge Fabrication: A dental lab technician will use the model to create a custom bridge, carefully matched to the color of your existing teeth.
  • Temporary Bridge: While the final bridge is being fabricated, you may be fitted with a temporary bridge.
  • Final Bridge Placement: Once the final bridge is ready, your dentist will securely attach it to the implants, either by screwing or cementing it in place.
