At MyDentist, we are strong advocates for preventative dental care, and that includes protecting your smile during sports activities. We create custom-fitted sports mouthguards for athletes of all ages and skill levels. While many associate mouthguards with high-impact sports like hockey and football, we recommend them for a wide range of activities, including non-contact sports. Whether you’re into volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, mountain biking, or rollerblading, a custom sportsguard can significantly reduce the risk of dental injuries.

A sports mouthguard is a protective device, typically made of moulded plastic, designed to fit comfortably over your upper teeth. It acts as a shield, protecting your mouth and face from potential damage. Specifically, a mouthguard:
There are three main types of sports mouthguards: ready-made, boil-and-bite, and custom-fitted. At MyDentist, we believe it’s important for our patients to understand the differences between these options to make an informed decision about their oral protection.
Often found in drugstores and pharmacies, ready-made mouthguards are pre-formed and available in limited sizes. These “stock” mouthguards are typically made from plastic or hard rubber in a U-shape, with a trough for the teeth and a lip to protect the gums. While they are the most affordable option, they offer the least customized fit and may not provide optimal protection or comfort.

Also available at drugstores, boil-and-bite mouthguards require heating in hot water to soften the material. Once pliable, the athlete bites into the guard to create a mould of their teeth. While this provides a slightly better fit than ready-made guards, it is not considered a custom fit. The material used in boil-and-bite guards is often less durable than custom options, making them more prone to wear and tear, especially for athletes who tend to chew on their mouthguards.
Custom sports mouthguards are prescribed and fabricated by a dentist to precisely fit an individual’s mouth. The process begins with taking an impression of the patient’s teeth using a dental mould. From this impression, a stone model is created, over which the mouthguard is formed using durable plastic. Custom mouthguards offer the most secure and comfortable fit, ensuring the guard stays in place during activity and allows for normal breathing and speaking. While they are the most expensive option, we believe that the superior fit, comfort, and protection make them the best choice for athletes who prioritize their oral health. A well-fitting and comfortable mouthguard is more likely to be worn consistently, providing the necessary protection during sports.
