If a sealant is damaged or lost, we will discuss the most appropriate course of action, which may include reapplying the sealant.
The Sealant Procedure: What to Expect
Applying a sealant is a quick and painless process. Typically applied to molars, the procedure begins with a thorough cleaning of the tooth’s chewing surface, ensuring all grooves are free of debris. The tooth surface may then be gently roughened to enhance the sealant’s adhesion. After a quick rinse and drying, the sealant is applied. Finally, the sealant is dried, and the procedure is complete!
In some high-risk cases, we may recommend applying sealants to a child’s primary teeth. Although temporary, these teeth play a crucial role in guiding permanent teeth into their correct positions. Premature loss of primary teeth due to decay can lead to misalignment as other teeth shift to fill the gaps. This can disrupt the proper eruption of permanent teeth. Sealants on at-risk primary teeth help ensure long-term dental health and a smooth transition to healthy adult teeth.
